NICKELODEON LAUNCHES FIRST GLOBAL ANIMATED SHORTS PROGRAM AND RECEIVES OVER 100 SUBMISSIONS FROM CREATORS REPRESENTING 20 COUNTRIES

Annecy, France: June 12, 2013 – Nickelodeon today announced that it has launched its first ever global animated shorts program to identify and develop new animation creative talent from around the world, and it has received over 100 submissions from artists, designers, writers, directors and comedians representing more than 20 countries across six continents (Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia). Combined with the more than 900 submissions from the U.S. shorts program, Nickelodeon has received over 1000 pitches for its 2013 global shorts program. Finalists from the international program will be announced later this summer.

The final submissions for 2013 were received at this year’s Annecy International Film Festival.  Fifteen ideas will be chosen from amongst the pitches submitted and will be developed into animated shorts with the potential to air on Nickelodeon channel’s and websites around the globe, as well as the Nick App. In May, Nickelodeon U.S. announced its 12 finalists from its 2013 shorts submissions out of over 900 submissions. Once decided, the International finalists will be added to the U.S. submissions for production.

“We know that great creative talent and ideas come from everywhere around the world, and we are committed to finding and cultivating the next generation of creative voices and giving them an opportunity,” said Russell Hicks, President, Content and Development, Nickelodeon. “Opening submissions on a global level brings us more fresh ideas, new characters, concepts and amazingly funny stories to our audiences everywhere.”

“We’ve had a striking response from the global creative community with our inaugural shorts program,” said Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President, International Production & Development for Nickelodeon. “We are very excited by the wide variety and diversity of the projects and look forward to selecting the shorts to ultimately develop into original content for our global platforms and to expand the program for next year.”

Concepts were received in all animation styles, from 2D, digital 2D, stop motion, CG and mixed media, from a broad pool of creative talent. Creators of the final shorts selected will be provided with the necessary artistic and production support teams to help them complete their fully animated original, humor-based and character-driven shorts.

About Nickelodeon’s Animated Shorts Program

Last year, more than 600 pitches were collected during Nickelodeon’s inaugural Animated Shorts Program in the U.S. From the pitches, 12 shorts were created, six are currently in series development and two will get pilot orders. All 12 will air on the network, or appear on Nickelodeon websites globally. Nickelodeon announced earlier this year that it will pick up Breadwinners, created by Gary “Doodles” DiRaffaele (MAD, Metalocyalpse), who was discovered from Nick’s 2012 Animated Shorts Program, and Steve Borst (Teen Titans Go!, MAD).  Breadwinners follows two booty-shaking ducks as they operate a bread delivery service out of their awesome, jet-fueled rocket van.  The series was picked up for 20 full-length episodes.

As the leader in television animation production, Nickelodeon has a legacy of creating ground breaking animated shows including The Fairly OddParents, SpongeBob SquarePants, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Dora the Explorer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Legend of Korra, which are all produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif.

After a 20-Year Battle, Urban Dance History is Finally Validated for the First Time in Oakland

NORTHRIDGE, CA, February 22, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- This event (March 9, 2013) is the first time that a museum will recognize this previously unacknowledged part of American history as documented by Thomas Guzman-Sanchez. It will include historical artifacts from Chain Reaction and other legendary OG (original generation) street dance groups that are responsible for the worldwide phenomenon commonly yet incorrectly referred to as "Hip Hop dance." African American Museum and Library at Oakland Chief curator Rick Moss will be presenting the new exhibit that credits Oakland as a birthplace of one of the many key parts of this urban dance history. Following the exhibit will be the premier of the feature documentary "Underground Dance Masters". The film and book, compiled over a twenty-year span, celebrate the history and the dancers that have contributed to this true American creation. Thomas along with his co-producer and brother Paul Guzman-Sanchez will be in attendance to introduce the film. After the screening Thomas will then participate in a lecture/Q&A and book signing. Many other legendary street dancers from Oakland who are featured in the film and book will be in attendance to celebrate this historical recognition.

"Thomas Guzman-Sanchez has created a powerful work that not only shows you where the origin of the moves came from, but solidifies a much earned place in Dance History for its inventors and dance groups." said Kenny Ortega Director/Choreographer of "This Is It" and "High School Musical" about the worldwide release of the new book. Author Thomas Guzman-Sanchez, considered one of the greatest street dancers in history, has spent 20 years getting the story right. What started in 1993 has led Thomas on an incredible journey from surviving a kidnap attempt in Paris; physical attacks in New York, to death threats to him and his family.

The author weaves the history, origin, diasporas and evolution of this true American creation, clarifying and validating for the first time the different dance forms that make up Urban Dance. He has brought together every legendary urban street dancer responsible for inventing and innovating what has become a worldwide phenomenon. Numerous universities have adopted his study. Anthropologist Joan Erdman PhD says, "Thomas is the worlds leading authority on Urban Dance History and Anthropology". The author has received top academic awards from several Universities and is also a proud member of the board of advisers for the American Heritage Dictionary. He is responsible for 23 new words and definitions in the new American vernacular.

Science Cafe Explores Controversy: First Offshore Wind Farm in the USA Now a Possibility for North Carolina

GREENVILLE, NC, July 05, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Christine M. Voss, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences is leading the next discussion on off-shore wind energy in North Carolina, at the next Coastal Science Cafe on July 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Capt. Bill's Waterfront Restaurant located at 701 Evans St, Morehead City, NC 28557. Tickets are available for this free event at http://www.go-science.org/science-cafe/

Participants at the next Coastal Science Cafe will receive an update on the impact studies being performed along the coast as well as learn the latest regarding wind energy development offshore. In addition, participants will have the unique opportunity to have their questions answered and concerns addressed by experts in the field.

The Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has approved three areas off the North Carolina coast for wind energy development. One area is located east of the Albemarle Sound in the northern part of the state. The other two are located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Five companies have expressed interested in developing wind farms within these approved areas.

North Carolina has more wind off its shores than any other state on the Atlantic Coast. The coast is unique because the sea floor drops off slowly. This leaves large stretches of water that are quite shallow and ideal for wind farms. Just harnessing a fraction of the wind energy resources off of the North Carolina coast would meet more than 20 percent of the states total energy needs. Those interested in exploring the current wind patterns and strengths along the North Carolina coast can interact with a new infographic developed by HintFM at http://hint.fm/wind/.

There are currently no installed offshore wind farms in the United States, so there are still many questions and concerns to be addressed. These include environmental impacts as well as potential impacts on coastal tourism.

Wind farms placed between 6 and 13 nautical miles from shore are barely visible on the horizon and are completely invisible during typically hazy summers. In addition, at the base of wind turbines there is a pile of large rocks called a scour apron. This pile of rocks is similar to what you would do to build a rocky habitat for fish, including the snapper-grouper complex that is critically important to commercial and recreational fishing.

Christine Voss has been engaged in all the renewable energy development and environmental sciences projects conducted by the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences team in interdisciplinary marine conservation ecology since 2009, when she began her postdoc. She has contributed significantly to UNC reports assessing the feasibility of offshore wind and marine hydrokinetic energy development along the NC continental shelf. She employs GIS in spatially explicit studies to determine how to avoid or minimize conflicts between wind farms and both wildlife and existing human uses of the Outer Continental Shelf.

Dr. Voss is also an ecosystems ecologist, using trophic modeling to develop an understanding of how food-web interactions and habitat alteration generate important direct and indirect effects in estuarine and marine ecosystems. She has published on indirect effects of barrier island food webs that imply predation risk on various threatened and endangered species. Dr. Voss continues her research on how sea level rise affects coastal marsh habitat, focusing on how the delivery of ecosystem services change as the geomorphology of estuarine shorelines is altered. She has also co-authored a book on the ecology and economics of compensatory habitat restoration.

Broadly, Dr. Voss is committed to producing scientific knowledge that will inform and enhance environmental and natural resource management. She recognizes that appreciation of ecological relationships can be used to protect natural and social capital by sustaining ecosystem services. For her, this includes understanding how coastal habitats benefit fish, wildlife, and people who live along the coast. More broadly, she realizes how harnessing our renewable energy resources, such as offshore wind energy, in an environmentally responsible way and ultimately weaning ourselves from fossil fuels, we can benefit in many ways.
