: Soundings: A Contemporary Score

MoMA's first major exhibition of sound art presents work by 16 of the most innovative contemporary artists working with sound. While these artists approach sound from a variety of disciplinary angles—the visual arts, architecture, performance, computer programming, and music—they share an interest in working with, rather than against or independent of, material realities and environments. These artistic responses range from architectural interventions, to visualizations of otherwise inaudible sound, to an exploration of how sound ricochets within a gallery, to a range of field recordings—including echolocating bats, abandoned buildings in Chernobyl, 59 bells in New York City, and a sugar factory in Taiwan.

The diversity of these works reflects a complex and nuanced field. Yet the exhibition posits something specific: that how we listen determines what we hear. Indeed, the works provoke and evoke—both in the maker and the museumgoer—modes of active listening, and a heightened relationship between interior and exterior space. At a time when personal listening devices and tailored playlists have become ubiquitous, shared aural spaces are increasingly rare. Many of the artists in the exhibition aim for such realities, and the sound they create is decidedly social, immersing visitors and connecting them in space. In many of the works, links are drawn between disparate topographies and subjects, giving rise to new understanding and experiences.

The artists in the exhibition are Luke Fowler (Scottish, b. 1978), Toshiya Tsunoda (Japanese, b. 1964), Marco Fusinato (Australian, b. 1964), Richard Garet (Uruguayan, b. 1972), Florian Hecker (German, b. 1975), Christine Sun Kim (American, b. 1980), Jacob Kirkegaard (Danish, b. 1975), Haroon Mirza (British, b. 1977), Carsten Nicolai (German, b. 1965), Camille Norment (American, b. 1970), Tristan Perich (American, b. 1982), Susan Philipsz (Scottish, b. 1965), Sergei Tcherepnin (American, b. 1981), Hong-Kai Wang (Taiwanese, b. 1971), Jana Winderen (Norwegian, b. 1965), and Stephen Vitiello (American, b. 1964).

Organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, with Leora Morinis, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance Art.

The exhibition is made possible by MoMA’s Wallis Annenberg Fund for Innovation in Contemporary Art through the Annenberg Foundation.

Major support is provided by Jerry I. Speyer and Katherine G. Farley, The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art, Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), Richard J. Massey Foundation for Arts and Sciences, and the Danish Arts Council Committee for International Visual Arts.

Additional funding is provided by the MoMA Annual Exhibition Fund.

Sandra Duran Wilson's Show "Beneath the Surface" at Pippin Contemporary

SANTE FE, NM, July 12, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pippin Contemporary (www.pippincontemporary.com) is holding a show for artist Sandra Duran Wilson from July 17th-July 30th at their new location on 200 Canyon Road. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, July 26th from 5-7 PM. "Beneath the Surface" tells a complex and visually captivating narrative. Through her highly abstracted and multi-layered paintings, Wilson presents an in depth exploration of the intersection between scientific analysis and esoteric interpretation.

The mixed media pieces in the show were inspired primarily by the artist's synesthesia, a perceptual condition that results in the crossing of the senses. "When I hear sounds and music I see colors," explains Wilson. Her work certainly reflects these shifts in awareness, with hidden layers that contain poems, words, and even entirely different compositions. "I approach the creative process in a very intuitive and meditative way," says the artist. "My paintings are multi-layered because they are continuous expressions of my constantly evolving perceptions."

The artist's diverse educational background also informs her unique conceptual approach. With degrees in neurology and art, Wilson has found that science and creativity are deeply connected disciplines. "To me, it is impossible to draw distinctions between the scientific and the spiritual. My art explores the nebulous space between what is proven and what is unexplainable."

Pippin Contemporary will be showing Sandra Duran Wilson's work from July 17th through July 30th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 26th from 5-7 pm.

Pippin Contemporary is a fine art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, focused on original abstract art. For more information, please contact us at (505) 795-7476.

Aleta Pippin of Pippin Contemporary Continues Her Path of Exploration...Pippin's August Show Titled, "The Exploration Continues," Will Feature the Gallery Owner's Newest Works

Aleta Pippin shares her love of being an abstract artist.

SANTA FE, NM, August 09, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Abstract Expressionist Aleta Pippin, contributing artist and owner of Pippin Contemporary, will be showing her newest works at her upcoming show, "The Exploration Continues." The show will run from August 15 to September 3, with the opening reception from 5-7PM on Friday, August 16. When Pippin decided to pursue art full-time, she followed it completely and has never looked back. Her body of work is representative of her personal life journey, always with a spiritual bent. Because one's journey is full of discovery, her work is a result of continual exploration - seeking and finding new ways of expression through texture and color.

Pippin believes true art comes from within, with the desire to express oneself; and in her case, color is central to her individual expression. Pippin embodies two traditionally separate mindsets: the entrepreneurial and the artistic, having the charisma and savvy of a business owner combined with the creativity of a successful abstract painter. This merging of talent has led her to a new gallery location on the world-renown Canyon Road, Santa Fe, *home to the third largest art market in the U.S. As life so often does, it has brought Pippin to a place of introspection - time will tell how this journey is demonstrated in art form, but one thing is for sure: Pippin will certainly make a statement.

"My statement is beauty, which can come in the form of joy, health, relationships, etc.," says Pippin. As an abstract artist, she gives the viewer the freedom to find their own truth and to see beauty in their own way when looking at one of her creations. Unlike a landscape or a still life, Pippin's abstracts are beautifully liberating, offering the viewer a creative window into resonant and deep beauty - the kind that blossoms under a figurative lens. Pippin enjoys success as an artist, having sold over 500 abstract paintings since 2005. It's not so much the selling that excites the artist; rather, it's knowing that the customer is investing in the artist's journey, it's knowing that the customer saw something he or she wants to bring home and live with indefinitely.
