1958. France. Directed by Louis Malle. With Jeanne Moreau, Alain Cuny, Jose de Villalonga, Gaston Modot. Malle (1932–1995) had been assistant to Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the great documentarian and oceanographer, on The Silent World. Although, in a sense, Malle beat his Nouvelle Vague rivals to the punch, he remained a kind of odd man out, not being a part of the Cahiers du Cinéma crowd. Moreau’s two early films with Malle (Frantic and The Lovers) set the stage for her sensational work with Antonioni, Godard, Truffaut, Losey, Welles, and Buñuel over the next five years, and, in fact, for the next half-century. In French; English subtitles. 88 min.
