The mixed media pieces in the show were inspired primarily by the artist's synesthesia, a perceptual condition that results in the crossing of the senses. "When I hear sounds and music I see colors," explains Wilson. Her work certainly reflects these shifts in awareness, with hidden layers that contain poems, words, and even entirely different compositions. "I approach the creative process in a very intuitive and meditative way," says the artist. "My paintings are multi-layered because they are continuous expressions of my constantly evolving perceptions."
The artist's diverse educational background also informs her unique conceptual approach. With degrees in neurology and art, Wilson has found that science and creativity are deeply connected disciplines. "To me, it is impossible to draw distinctions between the scientific and the spiritual. My art explores the nebulous space between what is proven and what is unexplainable."
Pippin Contemporary will be showing Sandra Duran Wilson's work from July 17th through July 30th, with an opening reception on Friday, July 26th from 5-7 pm.
Pippin Contemporary is a fine art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, focused on original abstract art. For more information, please contact us at (505) 795-7476.
